How We Met Part 2

Sharing is caring!

…Aaron picked up the next evening for our date.  He was wearing a navy blue t-shirt (which nicely showed off those HUGE biceps) and gave me a hug right off the bat.  Uh-oh.  He was a ‘nice guy.’  I never dated ‘nice guys.’  I mean, I didn’t date motorcycle-riding, joint-smoking, club-hopping jerks, but my ‘type’ was usually the guy who is self-confident and has a good sense of humor.  They know they are funny.  I usually just wrote off nice guys as being boring and not funny.  They’d fawn all over me and there was no element of mystery or chase.  Yawn!  One time I was friends with this ‘nice guy’ who was clearly very interested in me, but I didn’t like him like that.  He would do ANYTHING for me.  And come on, where’s the fun in that?  (I realize I sound like such a stupid little girl here.)

Well here’s the thing:  I’d dated non nice-guys pretty much exclusively and every. single. one of them was either a total jerk or broke my heart.  Or both.  So the thought occured to me (or maybe God put the thought in my head) that “Hey, dating the funny guy hasn’t worked out so well for me lately.  Maybe this one time I should give the nice guy a chance.”  And that was the best decision I’d ever made.

Our date was super weird.  And memorable.  He took me to his friend’s house where there were about five other couples.  We had a hot dog roast and his friends and I talked about Harry Potter (the 6th book had just come out) and his friends were funny.  After dinner, we played this game they made up which I’m going to call “Blindfolded Piggy Back Tag.”  I piggy backed on Aaron’s back and he was blindfolded.  And everyone else did the same with their dates.  There was a lot of people running into trees and fences and whatnot.  It was pretty funny.  And sweaty.  Which was awkward for a first date.

I wasn’t smitten with Aaron yet, but we hadn’t really had a chance to talk.  After the weird game, we went inside to play cards.  During that time I learned a little more about him, like that he played the guitar (which I swooned at.)  We left at 2 am.  When he dropped me off at my house, I asked if he wanted to hang out on the trampoline with me (I lived at my parents’ house) because I loved hanging out on summer nights when it was all quiet and there was a gentle breeze.  Wow, I miss those nights.

So he came with me and we laid on the trampoline, looking at the stars and cuddling under the blanket.  The thought of kissing him had never even crossed my mind.  I just knew it wouldn’t happen because we just didn’t know each other and I wanted to get to know him.  But as we talked, I learned more about the sweet and caring person he was.  He said, “I can’t believe I’m here with such a beautiful girl.”  It sounds like such a line, but with Aaron I just knew he was sincere.  We found ourselves having our first kiss.

After that, we were pretty much inseparable.  We saw each other every single day save one for the entire six months we dated before getting engaged, which is another story for another day.  But after just a few days of dating him, I knew I was falling in love with him, which totally freaked me out, by the way.

Nearly 5 years ago we got married.  He’s my best friend, my partner in crime.  We make plans and live our lives together and have a blast doing it.  We are so similar yet different in fun and unique ways.  I call him Bear and he calls me Wiffle.  (And now my two-year-old calls him Bear too.)

And we make super cute babies.  🙂
Happy Valentines Day!!
