Give Your Living Room a Fresh New Look in 1 Hour

Sharing is caring!

Christmas decor always seems to bug me after Christmas is over.  Almost feels like my house is saying “What is this stuff still doing up?  Christmas is over, this is just embarrassing.”  Some people get sad that Christmas is over, but I’m always ready to clear away the decor.  My house is holiday decorated for like four months straight from fall to winter so I am ready for some one-size-fits-all decor.

And this year I went green.

Not environmentally friendly, although that would be nice.  Last year I was mostly about the white and a little aqua.  But it was getting boring, so this year I’m adding in some color.  Starting with apple green.

This was such an easy and quick update.  First I spray painted my wall frames aqua.

The cornices I found at Goodwill for like a dollar each.  They are actually curtain rod holders but who can tell.  I hung them up in the frames and put some little IKEA plants on them.  I love the green effect.

Then I sewed up the pillow cases in like two seconds.  I’ll show you how to take a half yard of fabric to a pillow case, tomorrow.

The whole update took like an hour!  Here’s my question:  should I add in touches of deep plum purple or bright coral pink?  I can’t decide.

Here’s my rule for decorating:  The big and expensive pieces of furniture, like the couch, should be neutral colors.  That way it’s easy and a lot cheaper to update your decor by just changing out accent pieces and wall decor!  Ta da!

And never buy a red couch.

  1. my vote is for the plum color… absolutely striking with the fresh green! But I have purple plastered all over my house, wardrobe and blog so you can’t trust me around that color. I love it!!! I love the palette you have going already and I feel the same way about getting the Christmas stuff down right away.

  2. I totally agree with keeping the big pieces neutral. I would add plum, and not because I’m partial for purple but the coral is a little to spring for right now. Does that make sense? Well, in my head it does. I just see coral as a spring/summer color.

  3. My vote is for plum as well, but what do I know…my tree is STILL up!

  4. I love your updates. SO pretty. It reminds me of an tranquil ocean beach house and I can see sheer white curtains dancing to the music of a gentle sea breeze. I don’t know if I would add other colors at all, but if you did any one of those colors would look great. And I have to say I have a red couch and I am absolutely irrevocably in love with it. I have had it for years and I will have it for years yet to come. And my home decor works out just fine. And my best friend has an extremely large sectional red couch and her house is absolutely amazing. SO I say never say never because you never know. love you!

  5. LOVE your fresh new look!! Apple green is a definite bonus. Looks great. (I painted my vanity Apple Green, when I was about 12 yrs. old -brings back memories.)

  6. Gorgeous update! Loving the apple green and although my favorite color is purple, I think the pink might add a fun fresh look to the room! Purple maybe seems a little dark and winter like for spring and the new year! Good luck deciding and I look forward to seeing the pillow cover tutorial!

I love the apple green, especially that print on the pillow! You are amazing. I would love to see the pillow cover tutorial as well. And I vote for plum! But I don’t necessarily think you need the plum. It looks great as it is!

  9. I would go with the plum. I can’t wait for the tutorial tomorrow!! Love the green (my favorite color).

Yes–the green fabric is from the Ruby collection–it is SO beautiful! I have to order more.

  12. I agree with you on neutral pieces of furniture. I love your ideas and I’m so in to making your home better. I think the plum would be amazing, it will really bring out the other colors too. Thanks so much for inspiring me and for sharing your wonderful gift of creativity. Awesome and Bravo! Can’t wait to see more.
    Take care, Susan
