10 Great & Cheap Ideas for a Romantic Valentine’s Day

Sharing is caring!

Can’t afford a babysitter or fancy restaurant (or both if you’re like me) this Valentine’s Day?  Here are some fun ideas to rekindle the romance with your sweetheart!

1.  Have an Indoor Candle Light Picnic:  Build a fort out of blankets on the floor with your take-out of choice, light some candles, turn off all the other lights.  Stare deep in each others eyes.  Swoon.  Just don’t burn the tent.

2.  Roast S’mores Over the Stove Top:  Turn on one or two of your stove burners, yes it even works with electric stoves!  Put a marshmallow on a fork and roast it over the burner.  Put the marshmallow on chocolate and graham crackers for s’mores and eat them while you watch a fun movie together.  PS-This is the best way to get an amazing smell in your kitchen!

3.  Make Dinner Together:  Seemingly obvious, but how often do you really cook with your spouse?  Start with an appetizer, cook a great entree, and end with a delectable dessert.  Even better, plan and shop for the ingredients together too!

4.  Create a “Staycation” Destination:  Choose a place where you’ve always wanted to travel together (like Paris, romance capital?!)  Put up posters of that place, rent a movie where the destination is central to the film, eat a dinner that is from that country.

5.  Have a Throwback V-day Fest:  Choose an older decade that you both loved…like the 80’s!  John Hughes was the king of teen romance films during that time, so rent movies like Pretty in Pink or 16 Candles.  Look at your old yearbooks and even read some of the things classmates wrote in them to trigger funny stories or memories you can share!

6.  Fun with Fondue:  Cheese or Chocolate, both are winners.  Chocolate is a little more sensual.  Make sure to stock up on delicious dippers (Cheese:  meats, veggies, breads, Chocolate: fruits, cookies, brownies, marshmallows, pretzels.)  Invite another couple or two over if you want.

7.  Write Love Letters:  Spend some time writing down things you love about each other.  Write about the things you admire in your spouse, things that they do to inspire or motivate you.  Write about their best qualities and why you are glad they married you.  Write two love letters…one to share and one to open next Valentine’s Day.

8.  Make a Video (no, not that kind!):  Turn on the video camera and put it on the two of you just being silly or having fun.  Talk about goals you hope to achieve that year, what funny things your kids are doing now and what you hope for them in the future.  Talk about current things that are happening to you.  Talk about what you love about the other person.  You can take some time to record yourself by yourself talking to your spouse as if you were writing them a love letter.  Watch it and then save it to watch in the years to come!

9.  Make Candy-Grams:  Remember asking your high-school crush to a dance by a poster with candy bars for the words?  Do that for your spouse!  Go to the store and buy a bunch of candybars that could be words, some poster board and markers, then come home and make each other a candy gram!

10.  Go to Bed Really Early:  You can go to sleep if you’re super duper tired, but the general idea here is to just get away from distractions like TV or internet.  Light candles, play romantic soft music and just talk to each other, give massages, and/or nuzzle.  🙂

What are your Valentine’s Plans??

I'm in the same exact boat this year (no babysitter, no going out). These are great ideas. My husband and I are going to make dinner together on Valentine's Day. I love the "Staycation" idea though; definitely going to do that for a much-needed at home date night in the near future.

  3. This list is a great idea. Great ways to spend the time with your honey without spending a lot of money.

Some great ideas here. Even though I don't have to worry about baby sitters any more, it's still nice to see a list of things that my sweetie and I can do, since we are on a tight budget!
