Things Nobody Told Me About Having a Baby

Sharing is caring!

Three years ago my life was about to change drastically.
Three years ago I was more uncomfortable than I’d ever been.
I wish that someone had told me a little more about what I was about to face.

Things Nobody Told Me About Having a Baby

You basically can’t move after a C-Section.
You have to have a whole big plan of attack about going to the bathroom (Yes, even for a C-Section although it’s much worse after a vaginal, I later learned.)
You’re still fat.
You bleed for a long time.
You still have to wear your dang maternity clothes.
Nursing a baby will be incredibly painful and frustrating and probably not work.

You will have this gigantic skin-fat-blob permanently attached to your once thin mid-section.
You will have to get up no less than three times a night.
Nursing takes FOR.EV.ER.
Your friends without babies will virtually disappear.
You have no friends with babies.
You can’t go from wearing maternity clothes to your old clothes.
Ergo you have to buy all new fat clothes.
Buying fat clothes sucks.
You will spend most of the day in pjs.
But you won’t be lounging around watching movies.

You will be holding a small baby and have no idea what it needs.
Your baby will poop through his clothes the second you change him.
You shouldn’t bother changing a tinkle diaper in the middle of the night.
You will have to pray a LOT.
You will be bored and lonely.
You’re not a failure if you hate nursing.

You will love the squishy little baby more than life itself.

And you’ll hold on to him so tight so he can’t keep growing up.

Happy 3rd birthday tomorrow Will.  I love you so much!!

LOL. So true. And thanks for all the reminders… my baby is due tomorrow and I still haven't had him… you've made me a little grateful he still hasn't made his appearance. 😉

  2. Goodness you're sooooo right. I was sitting there going YES, YES, YEEEESSS so so so right. I was in the same position for, like, everything (except the boy-part). Thank you!!

All true. My boys are 22 and 20 and your post brought back so many memories.

you nailed it! All so true, I can relate to every single item you mentioned! But they are so worth it 🙂

I don't have kids… I didn't realize that going to the bathroom after was going to be epic…. no one talks about these things; thanks for bringing them to light!

I am so going to have my little sister read this. She will be having her first soon and has very unrealistic ideas of motherhood. I have tried to warn her, but I don't think she believes me.

  11. So glad to read this. My son isn't due until the end of June, but I love getting a realistic picture of what to expect!

  12. Vanessa Goertzen says:

Those are really sweet pictures! And I agree, there are many things you just don't anticipate no matter how many books you read or how many classes you take.

  13. I've given birth via vaginal and c-section and the c-section is worse. You have a much longer recovery time w/ the c-section and its takes so much longer for your muscles to get to even a semblance of what they once were. Such a good post, you nailed it!

  14. That last picture is so cute, and what you said is so true.

  15. It's a Fantastic Life says:

What a great post! So sweet and so TRUE!

Felt the same way about having my son 2 yrs ago. It's HARD having a baby! Really hard! And the bathroom stuff–ugh. I really don't want to go through that again (I thought I was going to have to go to the ER). So not fun. But yes, your baby is worth all the suffering. But seriously, can't modern medicine make it easier for us??? (more than they already have)

  17. So true- this made me smile. This should be made into a brochure for mothers-to-be!!

You are so right… especially the breast feeding! Great post.

  19. OMG, I can't tell you how much I agree with everything you just said, and breast feeding really does take AGES… why did no one ever mention that!! My husband once "helpfully" pointed out that I was spending 16 hours a day feeding (it was twins, who did not get enough milk form me and have to have a bottle afterwards anyways) *sigh*
I just wish women told others more about what to expect so everyhting is not a surprise (oh, and don't get me started on the bleeding, after a week I thought I was going to die!! bahahaha!)

  20. All you said is true and brought a smile to my face. I'm a grandma now after going through the whole process bringing our 5 children into the world…I'm so happy to have daughters and daughters-in-law,who are brave and honorable women who are willing to go through it all for their children….our grandbabies. 🙂

  21. J A C Q U E L I N E says:

I agree with all that and add to it…all the "advice" your friends without kids give you magically do not apply when they start having children…:)

  22. Cheryl @ Sew Can Do says:

Loved this. It's so nice to hear honesty about the stuff that isn't so great and how hard it really is. Not knowing that's coming makes it even harder! I've gone through it 3 times, so those sweet kids make it worth it in the long run, but it would be nice if more moms would tell it like this, so you don't feel like you're alone in the struggle!
