My Terrible, Horrible, No-Good Very Bad Day

Sharing is caring!

The last several days have been one word:  crazy.  and stressful.  Okay, two words.  Oh wait, exhausting.  Three words.  Let me share…

Saturday morning I was woken up at 5:45 (yes AM) by my three-year-old son whimpering and crying that he didn’t feel good.  His tummy hurt.  His head was burning up.  I jumped out of bed and went to get him some breakfast and some medicine.  He’d been having a fever for the last two days and I felt sick to my stomach that it wasn’t going away.

You see, we were leaving that day.  On a plane.  To visit my sister several states away.  And my insurance is not great for travelling situations.  I really didn’t want to take my kids to another state and have to pay for a doctor’s visit and meds.  So as soon as Urgent Care opened, I took W in.  And yes, he tested positive for Strep Throat.  Hooray for me.

We got the prescription and I drove home.  I told my husband to take in my baby and both get tested for strep.  I didn’t bother for myself because I’ve never had it and felt fine.  My husband was super stressed out because we had to leave for the airport at 1 and it was 10 and we still had a lot to do.  But he went in to get tested and after waiting a good hour and a half, the test was positive for the baby and negative for him.  Two kids with strep…yay!  The best part was my friend telling me about how Scarlet Fever was going around my neighborhood, an illness stemming from strep.  Yes, scarlet fever–that ancient illness from Jane Austen times.  I was praying my kids didn’t have that.

Cut to the flight.  Thankfully we weren’t late, but as a nauseas pregnant woman who gets airsick, I didn’t stand a chance of not throwing up.  The take off was very rocky and sure enough, the barf bag was used.  The duration of the flight was exhausting:  trying to keep my baby still was like trying to fight a baby bear cub eager to get some honey.  But at least he didn’t cry much and the pressure of the airplane didn’t bother him.  And ps, I threw up again when we landed.

The day improved a little after that, only having to wait about an hour at the airport for my sister to pick us up and two hours for my husband to get the rental car.  We finally ate dinner at about 10 pm…which if you have been pregnant, you will know that is a very long time to wait!

We kept my kids away from everyone until they weren’t contagious anymore, but then W broke out in hives.  I thought maybe it could be the post-strep rash, but my husband was pretty sure it was hives and that he was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics.  He gave him some children’s Benedryl and after sleeping, the hives calmed down quite a bit.  But now I need to get new antibiotics.

And this morning I took my prescription for my pregnancy migraines for the first time and it knocked me out like an elephant tranquilizer.  I could not keep my eyes open, I couldn’t walk.  Sometimes you just have to sleep but when you’re a mom, you are never allowed that privilege.

So yes, I’m tired.  But things are hopefully calming down.  We’re having fun with my sister’s family and I’ll show you some fun posts soon about it.  This year has been crazy and it’s only going to be crazier from here on out.

  4. Oh I feel SO bad for you!!! I have never had so many things go wrong in one day like that…but just being pregnant also…I can’t imagine it!! I am still dealing with nausea too and I really thought it would be better now that I am almost 19 weeks…and its just the same and driving me nuts! My prescription nausea pill also knocks me out within an hour…same symptoms you get from your pill. Isn’t it the worst? Sometimes I can’t decide what’s better…being sick or not being able to function because I am falling asleep! Oh the things we do for these babies;)
