Santa Bottle Cozy

Sharing is caring!

I know Thanksgiving is tomorrow (gasp! Are you ready??) but after that we are all clear to talk about Christmas until the cows come home!   Today I’m so excited to be sharing with you this really simple way to dress up a  glass of wine (or sparkling cider in my case since I don’t drink) by making a Santa Bottle Cozy.

I pretty much adore everything about Christmas, but something I think is a really cool tradition is neighbor gifts.  It’s such a nice way to connect with your neighbors and share a cute and clever little gift.  I’m not great at the clever part but I can come up with some pretty cute ideas if I do say so myself.  My husband and I love Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider and it’s such a fabulous addition to the holidays (fun for New Year’s Eve too!)  Since they sell ’em like crazy around Christmas in Utah where I live, they make a great neighbor gift.

But as easy as it is to stick a bow on there, it’s SO much more fun and cute to dress it up in this fun little santa ‘outfit.’  And it’s actually still pretty easy.  If you want to do a bunch, like 10, I think it would probably only take you an hour (maybe two) start to finish.

Here’s how you do it!

Supplies (to make one cozy)

  • 1 square of red satin fabric, cut 11.5×11.5.  You could use any red fabric though, from cotton to fleece.  Fleece would be kinda hard tho.
  • About 15 inches of black ribbon (I used some black velvet ribbon from Hobby Lobby.)
  • 1 ‘belt’ jewel, you can find these in craft stores.
  • 20-25 inches of a thin ribbon in a coordinating color

Step 1:  Fold your square in half.  You can pin if you need to but I always just use my fingers to hold it in place.  Use your overcast stitch on your sewing machine (or just a straight stitch if you have no idea what I’m talking about!) and sew down the side, pivot, and sew one of the short sides.

Step 2:  Poof out the bottom of your cozy and smooth it out so the corners lay flat.  Mark a line perpendicular to the seam about 1.5 inches from the corner tip.  Sew a straight line on each side, then trim.  I sew an overcast seam to prevent fraying but you can do a zigzag too.

Step 3:  To make a casing, Fold the top over 1/4 inch and then over again 5/8th inch.  Iron it flat.  Then carefully sew around your casing taking care to leave an opening for threading your ribbon through.

Step 4:  Use a safety pin to help guide your ribbon through (NOT the black one you will be using for the Santa belt.)  Tie the two ends together.

Step 5:  Flip the entire thing right side out and slip your bottle in.  Cinch up the tie and tie a loose knot.  Then string your belt jewel through the ribbon, wrap it around the middle and hot glue in place.

Now add a cute tag and leave it on your neighbor’s door!
