Good News for Sad Tummies: Lactaid

Sharing is caring!

I’m pretty fortunate…I’ve never had a problem with dairy.  I can eat ice cream, cheese, milk, till the cows come home (pun intended.)  But my husband and kids are not so much that way.  And so many other people around the world suffer with some level of lactose intolerant.  To be honest, my family is not that intolerant…if that’s the right way to say that.  But if they have a lot of lactose for extended period of time, things start to get ugly.  So we just give our kids lactose-free milk–Lactaid.

Lactose is the major carbohydrate in milk and other dairy foods and contains two simple sugars–glucose and galactose.  Many peoples’ bodies struggle to break down the lactose into the simple sugars because they lack the enzyme that breaks it down (lactase.) You can develop any amount of lactose intolerance at any point in your life.  And it seems like it can come and go–you have it as a baby, then it goes away, then you get it again as an adult.

I participated in a informational session about Lactaid and I learned a lot of things I didn’t know.  Did you know that Lactaid carries things besides milk?  They also have cottage cheese, egg nog, even ice cream.  (That’s good news for my brother who is extremely lactose intolerant!)  The ice cream comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Cookies & Cream, Strawberries & Cream, Butter Pecan.

The Lactaid milk is real milk, just 100% lactose free.  And it’s calcium enriched.  The lactase enzyme is added to the milk to break down the lactose which makes it a tiny bit sweeter.  If you want to cook with it, you don’t even notice.  We’ve been drinking Lactaid for years and so has my brother who swears by it.  No tummy troubles here!
