House Update

Sharing is caring!

Hold on…I need to scream. {AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!}

Whew, okay.  I needed that.

It’s been a super stressful year so far.

Here’s what happens when you build a house (not custom.)  At least here is what has happened with us.

Step 1.  Find your lot…Check.  Or not.

We found the perfect lot.  But my husband is possibly the worst decision-maker ever–meaning he takes FOREVER to decide things.  And don’t worry, he knows I think this since I tell him all the time.  But the problem is that I usually am a quick decision maker and ever since being married to him, I’ve gotten more and more indecisive myself.

So after we found the lot and picked the house plan, we met with the architect to discuss a few custom features we wanted in our house (bigger deck, window placement, etc.)  We expected to hear back about all the pricing a few days later.  Well it ended up being a full month later that we finally heard back.  I guess this is to be expected, since the company is growing so fast and they only have one architect on staff.

But during that month, we had plenty of time to revisit our lot, our finances, our situation, etc.  We re-thought nearly every aspect of our initial choice and probably changed our mind 100+ times during the 30 days.  I think we drove our Realtor to madness and I’m pretty sure he is regretting giving me his phone number since we texted him like a billion times.  Ironically, we wound up sticking to our original decisions, and that’s most likely what we will do.

Step 2.  Pick our your design choices.

The next step for us is to meet with our designer (who happens to be the lovely Wendy of Shabby Nest) and pick out our exterior and interior choices.  This has been another head-scratcher.  I thought I knew what I wanted…and actually I most do.  But I literally could not sleep one night because I could not decide between engineered hardwood and high quality laminate.  I got SO many votes for laminate when I asked on social media and in the end, the anxiety of trying to take care of hardwood floors without scratching them won out and I decided to pick laminate.  I went into the Design Center and saw their Level 4 laminates which were actually seriously impressive.  I mean look at this…can you believe that’s laminate?  They texturize it so it even looks like it has the texture of wood.  And I really like the idea of no scratches.  What are your thoughts on laminate vs. hardwood?

There are lots of other decisions to make, but we are planning on doing the standard options for a few to save money and splurging on things now that will be harder to change later.  And how do you pick a paint color for your entire house?

We probably won’t be meeting with Wendy for a few more weeks though, since my husband is currently out of town for business and needs to sort a few things out at work when he gets back.  I honestly don’t think they will break ground on our house until mid-April.  But they guarantee a finish date of 105 days from Dig…so hopefully we can still move in by the end of summer.

The biggest problem right now is that I feel so very limbo.  I don’t really want to do home projects since pretty much everything I do will be a waste of money or time.  And most of the rooms in my home are decorated well enough to leave alone.  I’m feeling quite uninspired and very tired.  So in case you noticed my embarrassing lack of posts, that is why.  In the meantime,  I will attempt to think of things to write about.

Good for you for even blogging when you felt like there was nothing to blog about. It stinks being in blah/limbo mode but it’s nice to see the human side of people in a non-human world – the world wide web. Good luck to you guys and hopefully things move forward quickly for you. And my husband is exactly the same but I say stick to your guns and make the decision for both of you! Besides, yours is the one that really counts right?

  2. Sounds stressful & exciting! Good choice with the laminate. We’ve had both, and laminate wins hands down with kiddos. 😉 Good luck with everything!

That’s what I figured…plus I’m pretty hard on my floors too. Thanks!

  3. Yay! I’m so jealous that you are picking out custom designs for your own house!!! How exciting! I love hearing the updates!

I have to say, it does make it easier to have a limited number of choices…but it’s still exciting! Thanks!

Oh girl. And I thought it was stressful just buying a house. I am sorry. FYI, I have a friend whose house was 4 months late being finished. Make sure there is some kind of clause in the contract where they have to take a certain amount of money off of the price of the house for every week or months that they are late, because you will still have rent to pay if they are late!
