How to Make a Bed

Sharing is caring!

I know what you’re thinking…do I really need instruction on how to make a bed?  No, I’m sure you don’t.  But making my bed hotel-worthy has been a practiced effort of mine over the last few years.  And did you know that this week is National Make Your Bed week?  I LOVE having a made bed.  That might not be very “hygge” of me, but having a clean bedroom and a made bed makes me so much more productive.  Why?  Because my unmade bed just screams “Come back to me!” and therefore, I cannot resist a temptation like that.  After being pregnant and having a baby the last two years, I’ve spend enough time in bed.  It’s time for me to have a made bed every day.

Ever since we upgraded to a King size bed, the extra width had me a bit flummoxed at first.  I really don’t like having a million pillows on my bed.  If I’m going to the effort to make it, it needs to be done in five minutes or less.  However, being the home decor lover that I am, I’m not going to be too minimalist and will have some extra pillows and blankets.  I had to play around with the right size and shape of pillows for awhile.

Here’s my favorite setup for a King size bed:

  • 4 sleeping pillows (king size):  My husband and I both like to have one for our head and one for wherever else to add support.
  • 3 Euro pillows (26×26):  I put these in front of the sleeping pillows
  • 1 Lumbar pillow:  This has to be big enough to complement the Euro pillows.  Some lumbar pillows are pretty small so I had to look around for the right size.
  • Fitted sheet and top sheet:  I know lots of people don’t like top sheets but I like being able to wash them easily and fold it over for that hotel look.
  • Extra duvet or comforter:  You can remove this during the warm months
  • Duvet with cover:  Choose a color as a jumping off point for the other bedding
  • Top quilt:  a quilt is nice for that extra level of coziness, extra warmth that can be easily removed without being too heavy on your legs and feet.  My favorite quilt is this one from Crane & Canopy, which has the matching Euro shams and goes with everything.
  • Throw blanket:  This is essential for me when I want to take a power nap during the afternoon.  I use my lumbar pillow and the throw blanket and lay horizontally across my bed so I don’t mess up the pillows.

Since I got the white quilt from Crane and Canopy, I felt like my bed was a little too white.  I got some navy blue sheets, which really helps balance out the lightness.  Now I have white, dark, and medium colors.  This is a big move for me, since I have always only purchased white sheets.

For your viewing pleasure, I filmed myself making my bed.  It might seem like a lot, but for me it is worth the extra steps to make my bed look as welcoming and presentable as a hotel.  I love it!!

  1. That’s how I nap, too!

My husband complains there’s too many covers on the bed with a top sheet, blanket and duvet. And we keep the duvet pulled down at night.

But, I want to add some layers…for color at the foot of the bed.

Your bed and room is very pretty. Thank you for the inspiration.
