You Want to Learn to Sew?

Sharing is caring!

I’ll have this week’s giveaway up later on, but right now I want to ask you all something.
I know a lot of you have recently acquired sewing machines but don’t know much about sewing.  I don’t profess to know everything about sewing…there are a lot of things I am terrible at!  (But then again, that goes for pretty much everything.)
Anyway, who would be interested in doing a sew-along with me?  Basically we would sew small beginner projects together that would teach basic principles and help you get to know your machines and gain the confidence to take on bigger projects.  We would cover basic sewing principles such as
  • Threading your machine
  • Winding your bobbin
  • Sewing a straight line
  • Different stitches
  • Troubleshooting
Things we could sew together would be things like:
  • Pot holders/trivets
  • Basic bag
  • Elastic waist skirt
  • Baby bib
And others!  Then, if we were feeling really adventurous, we could move on to things like zippers and sleeves!

Anyway, if enough of you are interested, then I’ll be starting the Sew-Along!  Be sure to speak up, your vote matters a LOT!

  1. This has been just what I've been looking for! I love craft blogs and get so many ideas from them, but I always skip over the sewing stuff cause I just don't know how. I miss out on so many projects. Count me in!

  2. Oh please, please, please!!! I have a love/hate relationship with my machine!

  3. After I move…in a week…I would love to participate and follow along, I can sew a bit but am a beginner, so this would be fun!

  4. I would love to do this!

  5. Heidi! I'm totally on board. Thanks again for having us over. It was GREAT to get to know you guys better. And don't hesitate to call if you need something. 🙂

  10. I am interested and I know several others I have talked too would be interested in this 🙂

  11. This would be so fabulous! 🙂

  12. Yes. My mother's tried to teach me twice and maybe having it in hard-copy will actually enable me to finally learn!

  13. Oh yes, please! I've got the machine, thread and fabric — I'm just too chicken to try anything on my own!!

  14. this is such a sweet thing you're doing. Tho I do know how to sew, I'm rather stuck with a machine right now that doesn't want to. I'd follow along tho just for fun 🙂

If you had to buy a new machine…what would it be…NOT looking at anything fancy, but one that sews well 🙂

  15. This is super!! What about thread tension?

  16. posidanielle says:

    I am so in!!! 😀 can't wait!

  17. this would be awesome! i need to learn how to sew a button hole, sew on a zipper and learn how to sew with stretchy fabric. cant wait for this to start!

  18. SN Photographer | Shannon says:

I would love to join in. I am more so interested and afraid of sewing a zipper.

  19. Christine says:

I have been trying to teach myself sewing and this would be a wonderful help to me. I hope that you go through with this and do the "sew along"!!! 🙂

  20. PLEASE do this! I would love to participate!

  21. Landon and Kylie says:

That sounds PERFECT! So many of the sew-alongs I've seen have been fairly advanced patterns…
I'd love to make a skirt!

  22. Please, please do this! I would love to learn from the basics on up instead of trying to jump into something too complicated for me.

  23. Heidi! I definitely need this! Count me in!

  24. The Allen Family says:

Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! I'd love to start out small and work my way up!

  25. I would love this too!!!

  26. Hillbilly Handiworks says:

    Zippers, buttons…the hard stuff!

  27. Me me me!! I have a sewing machine I bought a few months ago, thinking the few skills I learned back in high school would come rushing back, but I was wrong. I have no idea what I'm doing, but would LOVE to sew!! So count me in as interested 🙂

  28. I would love, love, love this! I did just get a sewing machine and my mom would teach me but she lives on the opposite coast… I would love any advice and certainly some basics! Thank you SO much!

  29. Heidi, please do NOT do a sew-along. I have no intention whatsoever of following along.

Just thought I'd let my voice be heard.

  30. smiliesar says:

    That would be awesome

  31. count me in!!!! i tip toe around my sewing machine everyday because i am afraid of using it!! what a wonderful idea! thanks

  32. Beth Anne McCann says:

I would follow along! This would be great!!

  33. I'd love that!
I don't have a sewing machine yet, but I'm planning on getting one soon 🙂

  34. This would be SOOO cool!

  35. This would be great! Thank you!

  36. Jana Floyd says:

    I do, I do, I do!!!

  37. My hubby actually does all the sewing…but seeing as he is gonna be gone til Christmas, it would be nice to be able to use it myself!

  38. Stephanie says:

Beginner sewing class would be the bomb. I'm a total novice. But I don't think showing us to thread a machine and wind a bobbin would be helpful since those are machine specific. I'd just like to learn as we make simple projects. That way we can practice what you're preaching as we go along!

  39. <3 this idea! Sewing is one of my favorite things and I'm always looking for more projects that will teach me more about it!

  40. I would love to be included if it's not too late!!

  41. Dizzie Noodle says:

oh me too! I just found yur blog and am in love! I know some sewing basics, but would love to do a sew-a-long!! 🙂

  42. Eileen Young says:

    Hello Heidi:

I would love to learn how to sew! I did notice that this blog is from 2010; will you be offering another class in the near future?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Heidi @ Honeybear Lane says:

Unfortunately this wasn’t a class, it was just a series of online tutorials. You can find them on my site under sewing!
