Add a Burn-Proof Grip to Pots and Lids with sugru

The other day, I was making blondies.  I was making them the traditional way, wherein you stir brown sugar and melting butter over a hot pot on the stove.  I also have one of those smooth electric top stoves which are very handy to clean, but not very handy at keeping a pot in place.  If you stir food in a pot, many times the pot will spin around with the spoon.  So I have to keep one hand on the handle of the pot and the other hand stirring.

My pot, unfortunately, has a thick metal handle.  And there is nothing covering it, so when the pot gets hot, so does the handle.  Can you see the conundrum?  Same problem with the pot lids.  If I’m trying to boil water, I always have to use a potholder to lift up the lid.  First world problem, right?  Still…it’s annoying.  And sometimes I forget to test if it’s hot and I have burned my fingers more than once.  So dangerous also!

I said to my husband, “We need to buy some pots that have silicone handles.  I’m sick of burning my hands!”

Did you know there is a product out there that is as easy to use as play-dough and yet strong enough to fix…pretty much anything?  Have you heard of sugru?

sugru

It’s pretty sweet.  It’s self-setting rubber.  When you first take the dough out of the pack, it is slightly sticky and has the consistency of play-dough.  Learn more about sugru here or keep reading!

This makes it very easy to use for anything.  Since I wanted to make myself some nice little silicone handles, I just wrapped some of the sugru around the handles of the pots and lids.  I had to make sure the sugru covered the entire diameter of the handle.

Now what?  Is it just going to be this sticky crap on my pot?  Nope.  I let it cure overnight and by morning it was hard as a rock.  But hard like silicone, not hard like old play-dough.  It feels like it is permanently bonded to the handles.

There are so many uses for sugru.  If you have something that you need to mend, sugru can mend it. Got a faulty broken iphone charger?  sugru.  Got a kitchen tile coming loose?  Put sugru on the underside and stick it back like gum.  It’s like they channeled the properties of old dried oatmeal that is impossible to scrub off the kitchen table…for good!  Give life back to your kids’ favorite things, or those shoes they seem to destroy so quickly.  There is pretty much nothing sugru can’t help with!

I love that my pots have safe handles now.  I cooked with the improved pots tonight and guess what–no burning hands!  And bonus, you can color code your pots with the lids so each pot and matching lid have the same color handle.  And no more losing your pot at a church pot-luck, you can find your bright red pot lid handle with ease!

This would be great for some of my metal handled cooking utensils. They always burn my hands and it drives me nuts! Thanks for the idea!

That’s crazy they even make metal handled cooking utensils without something to protect the use from burning their hands. But sugru to the rescue!

  6. When I went to the website I noticed the little blurb about fixing Buzz Lightyear’s leg – which I could use it for! I thought we now just had a sad, crippled Buzz in our house since I have tried super glue to no avail…amazing!
